Happy Equinox Folks… !

There is change and fire in the air as things are beginning to reform in our lives. Small cracks have been appearing, crisis and chaos seems to be the theme that has been running on and off for quite some time now, secrets have been revealed, ghosts of the past have come back to haunt us asking for completion and some of you may be observing new sprouts in your psychic sinews after the recent breakdowns. New pathways from the dust have been forming.
This is a time where the old may be falling away or you may be re – addressing many belief structures in your life. What are the foundations of your beliefs? Is it time to explore/consider new possibilities? Are your beliefs truly serving your highest potential, or are you limiting yourself? Keep questioning and investigating your basic assumptions about life. Much growth occurs out of the instability of chaos, so don’t be afraid to challenge yourself, the strength of transiting mars can assist in diving to the roots and the source of mystery, personal and collective.
With Mars joining Saturn in the philosophical, adventurous but somewhat fundamentalist sign of Sagittarius, exalted Venus travelling with Mercury through Pisces, both signs ruled by Jupiter, the planet of wisdom, higher knowledge, higher mind, religion, education etc, this is a time where some, many or all of these themes will be playing out strongly for the next month or so.
Jupiter in Libra and Venus in Pisces are in mutual reception and so many of these changes & questions will focus around the relationships in your life, as well as your values, tastes and desires. Jupiter went retrograde on march 8 and will appear to move back for the next 4 months in Libra – sign of partnership par excellence, so many of these changes, beginnings and endings will occur in our close relationships, as well as business partnerships. These areas of life have been on a forward roll since Jupiter entered Libra on 12 Sept ’17, but now the retro motion encourages a pause, to ask ourselves, is this really the direction I want to be heading with this person, these people, business etc, in my life? Is this where I wish to continue moving? Some relationships are ready to end, others are just beginning, and others have an opportunity for deep healing, understanding and transformations.
Mars and Saturn are not complementary energies and we usually feel this as frustration and delays, wanting to move forward but feeling limited by circumstance, or needing to slow down but feeling impatient and hot headed. Mars makes exact conjunction on the 1st and 2nd of April, so watch for blow outs and rash actions, as situations over this month could erupt, esp if unexpressed feelings have been seething below the surface for a while. Expressing all our human emotions is the most natural thing, so it is important to get in touch with your fire in healthy and creative ways, rather than bottling things up and exploding. Watch the news as unexpected and sudden events are more likely.
The tension this energy generates can actually be extremely constructive if channeled consciously, and much progress and work can be achieved. Move your body, cultivate discipline, have fun, dance, practice whatever is your practice and find a way to work with the tensions, frustrations and limitations, be creative and play – a sense of humour toward yourself can bring much lightness.
Crisis brings change, and us humans are notoriously reluctant to change, preferring our comfortably uncomfortable ruts… however the nature of life is constant flux, and we will find greater pressure on the immovable aspects of our personality, the more we resist the changes that need to happen within. The spirit of water can be a great teacher…
Mercury is currently debilitated in Pisces and will go retrograde between 22 March – 15 April. As Mercury is travelling with strong Venus, many of the positive attributes can come forward. You may have brilliant flashes of ideas, inspiration and intuition, you may find yourself pouring out creative works in your particular art or craft. Poetry and creative writing can be especially stimulated. The mind and heart may be dreaming big, ideals, visions and fantasies, so make sure you can ground them as well. Dreaming is a powerfully creative tool which can be utilised to assist in manifesting what we want in life but it must be grounded in reality through effective action, otherwise daydreaming can turn into spiritual bypassing and idealistic fantasy. Take care with clear communications, thinking can get muddled and unrealistic as rational Mercury can struggle in the sign of the fish.
Life is continually happening and we are always playing. Understanding how and why you do the things you do is a skill – the balancing of one’s inner energies begin to reflect in the harmonisation of external events surrounding you. The key to developing this skill lies in the reflective light of awareness & self observation with an impartial sense of compassion. It takes time, practice, patience, effort and faith in oneself; the changes are subtle however the long term effects are profound. Great things take time; a peaceful mind and heart are rich rewards.
Remember, you are not controlled by external events/planets etc, however as powerful conduits and receivers of energy we have the ability to manipulate and ride the waves in the direction we wish to go. As the familiar saying goes, you can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf!
I study and practice Vedic Astrology which uses sidereal measurements. It is the same as western astrology in many ways but with some very specific differences. To explore how these energies and planets are affecting you personally, or to learn more about your self, you can contact me for a consultation, or I can highly recommend my teacher with over 40 years of experience : Komilla Sutton, as well as my friend Vijay Goel.
I am hearing of many souls passing at this time… stay centred and grounded during flux…
Solar eclipse now and still volatile planetary energies catalysing changes and shifts. Let go of what needs to pass and fall. It is the hardest to do. But it is possible. Let the changes happen, step into the unknown.
There are greater forces, undercurrents and overtones that permeate our lives, we are never really alone, nor are we always the sole captain of our ship.
Learn to ride the waves, don’t get dumped by powerful emotions… Put on your own lifejacket first before helping others, lest one get drowned trying to save others….and remember, this too shall pass.
The amount of chaos in life, personal and collective is not as a result of outside forces, but a barometer to the level of imbalance in the way we are living our lives; thoughts, values and beliefs, which largely determine the way we go about things.
Without higher guidance other than corrupt popes, priests, prophets and politicians, when atheism is rife, religion is full of dogma, and spirituality is shrugged off as pseudo- science, no wonder so many of us struggle in the world with profound mental and emotional problems, which are really wake up calls from our spirits.
Our western world is struggling in a capitalistic divide and conquer structure which alienates us from each-other…
These are for sure trying times, designed to wake and shake us up from slumber. What looks like a material crisis is really a spiritual crisis.
Stick together folks, while the layers peel back, keep the mind and the heart open x

Moon is conjoining Mars in Scorpio, in the nakshatra Anuradha. Its ruler is Saturn.
Saturn and Mars are not easy energies. They create tension when associated with eachother. This tension can be used constructively or destructively.
With the sensitive and emotional moon passing through a conflicted area over the next few days, plus with other turbulent planetary energies, take care of yourself and avoid unnecessary arguments, debates and heated discussions. Metaphorical storms are likely at this time, which can be destructive, though usually what falls away is meant to. Storms clear new paths too.
Practice the Pause before flaring up, be mindful, say and express what you need to if things need to be brought out in the open, which in this time may be likely.
Secrets and situations from the past may be knocking on your door asking for completion.
Practice letting go of what is no longer relevant in your life now. There is strength now to gather the courage to look deep in the heart and nature of things.
This is a firey energy so some may expect sudden news.
Remember we are not controlled by starry and planetary energy, they are facillitators of cosmic energy and we are conduits. Greater awareness of how your energy flows allows for greater self control and therefore less tossing around by external events.
Above all be kind to yourselves and to others.
(I study and practice vedic astrology, also known as jyotish. It is based on the sidereal zodiac)
What is this strange, ephemeral sadness that rises up from time to time?
Is it all the grief of everything that has ever been lost? What is this hollow sense of loss and emptiness?
One day, you may find yourself where the weight of anguish and despair feels absolutely unbearable, but you cannot die, you refuse to end your life even though you wish to, your mind is fully conscious, and you are lying there surrounded by that immense bog of feelings.
Perhaps there is a numbness that starts to come over you, as though you have been lying on the floor of a forest for a long time, and the weeds begin to grow around you, enveloping your entire body. Your breath begins to slow down and deepen, your heartbeat is barely perceptible, your body begins to feel a little distant… Numbness is an integral, yet temporary sensation, part of trauma and the healing process.
One of it’s useful functions is to create space from the intensity. The nerves and sensory perceptions are muted to a degree. However, many psychological blocks often develop due to trying to make what are meant to be temporary coping mechanisms into permanent modes of operating. Over the years, we amass a wonderful collection of these mechanisms & strategies, designed ultimately, to avoid pain.
With simple observation it is clear to see that all of life and all that occurs in life, is transient. If you sit with any sort of pain or discomfort long enough and follow the threads far enough, you will see this for yourself. Even the heaviest depressions have a limit. Feelings come and go. One of the main purposes of my work is to inspire a questioning of one’s basic emotional and mental nature; self inquiry into the heart of feeling, to ask, who is the I that sees, feels and thinks?
Trauma is an integral part of life. When properly understood and utilised, the process of going through painful and arduous experiences can foster deep strength and resilience in very specific and profound ways. This is the understanding upon which many indigenous cultures integrated certain initiatic rites of passages into their rituals, traditions and ways of living. What often appears harsh to the western mind and culture of modernity was deemed an essential part of the healthy psychological development of a human being. Although some trauma can be very damaging, causing deep emotional scars, it is never in vain, if one changes the approach that one handles and deals with their experiences. It is necessary to have strong support and to apply kindness, awareness and generous lashings of self – compassion.
Peter A Levine speaks extensively about trauma in his book “In an unspoken voice”. He succinctly illustrates the point I am making in this paragraph:
“Recently, a young Iraq veteran took issue with calling his combat anguish PTSD and, instead, poignantly referred to his pain and suffering as PTSI— the “I” designating “injury.” What he wisely discerned is that trauma is an injury, not a disorder like diabetes, which can be managed but not healed. In contrast, post-traumatic stress injury is an emotional wound, amenable to healing attention and transformation”.
Over the years I have explored a multitude of approaches, while sitting with the emotional repercussions from the experiences i’ve had in my life. What works for me now, when navigating and sitting with sadness and depressions is approaching the mood with an attitude of curiosity. I invite the sadness or depression, I do not deny it’s existence, nor do I try hide it or make it go away. I feel it deeply, wholly and as much as I can, until it moves. Friends often say that I never hide my feelings. In fact, I don’t really know how to.
In a universe of duality and all shades in between, I find that creating an open opportunity for myself with the spirit of curiosity has been monumental in finding peace within personal chaos, challenges and confusion. It helps me discover hidden facets to complex situations and to deeply accept whatever is going on, fostering patience and calm, eliminating anxiety. In this sense I suggest a radical approach to healing, or simply put“re-balancing”, where we are not victims of circumstance, but actively living in relationship to and communion with life; a constant invitation for curiosity, flexibility and improvisation in every moment, in other words, to dance with life.
The voice I speak with comes from my own direct experiences of trauma through abuse, deaths, depression, despair, isolation and loneliness, as well as all the myriad branches of challenges that have sprouted from a dysfunctional start to life. My voice is also shaped by the profound blessings, joys and bliss I have enjoyed, as well as endless teachings from masters and teachers both living and passed. All that I share comes from a (short) lifetime of observation, experimentation and application.
My firm belief is that as spirits/souls, we do not come into this world with more than we can handle, that we have a choice to allow pain to turn into wounds or wisdom & that we can also choose to take adversity by the horns, using it to evolve and grow into authentic human beings.
What is Beauty?
Beauty naturally arises when certain elements are in harmony; harmonious relationships between things.
Beauty is a natural by-product of harmonious arrangement. To be beautiful beyond superficiality, is perhaps when one’s thoughts and impulses are in harmony with the greater cosmic pulse – which is received through the heart. An open heart is needed, one free of personal agenda.
Many of the principles of music theory can be applied to self, others and the relationships we have.
When a note, a chord or scale is not in harmony with the greater context of a song, we do not need to discard the entire song.
Re-arrangement, from a musical perspective implies the creative processes of intuition and inspiration of balancing and restructuring; harmonising seemingly incompatible elements.
We simply need to add or subtract certain elements to the composition.
The uni – verse
Is one song.
Perhaps we are simultaneously, the composer, the conductor, and the composition.
Harmony is the goal
Beauty is the expression.
The thing about acceptance is this:
I reckon we all know our flaws, but it can be very hard to accept them, or even to realise that we are not accepting them, especially if some are a little obscure.
Say, for example, someone comes along and seems rude – perhaps their manner of speaking causes feathers to ruffle –
I immediately think to myself, how do I do that?
The basic understanding is that on a fundamental level, my reaction has nothing to do with them.
I will look at that person and breathe into the agitation/frustration/annoyance etc, smile, and say to myself “It’s ok”
Because, who is making it not ok?
So then, why can’t I be ok with it?
Well, I can!
If I choose to.
Being somewhat of a stubborn creature, when I want to do something, I will find a way. There is little that I can’t do, when I engage all of my being.
So I say to myself,
“How can I ?”
-I want to find a way, i believe i can, therefore i shall –
So, this person is doing this thing, I don’t like it and its annoying.
I realise that I too, can also be like that – and i’m ok about that.
I observe the other/situation without judgement, but with curiosity and compassion, feeling the effect on me, applying the same balm of curiousness and compassion and then resolving to adapt and change my behaviour, gently (if necessary).
All the while, i’ll breathe and smile internally at the situation, seeing the beautiful, gorgeous imperfectly perfect humanity in both parties – Let Them Be Them.
Then, I can work at applying that to the aspects of myself that I may be struggling with.
The point is, that i have found the annoyances and frustrations dissipate quite remarkably as i learn to genuinely accept people as they are.
(This process I have shared is certainly not within any context that involves abuse in any form. In walking away from a destructive situation one can still apply these principles/ideas, while maintaining full personal dignity and integrity )
Flux and Transformation
So… its been a pretty wild ride this month hey?
There are many big changes currently occurring, collectively and individually, as we are being pulsed and moved to face things that feel uncomfortable.
That is the nature of change and transformation though, and no one escapes it. Honestly, we can try, through many different routes that provide solace and comfort for a time, but I am reminded whenever I feel challenged, to stop resisting the discomfort, take a moment to connect to my breath, breathing deep into my belly and chest, and see times like these as invitations to step up and become more of who I am.
Difficulties and challenges are an inherent and necessary part of life, therefore having a constructive approach goes a long way to ease mental stress, even so far as to affect potential outcomes in more positive ways.
Our state of mind is the single one aspect of ourselves that we have control over, with free will and intention, and it is highly underestimated, the power in which we have to navigate and direct this powerful tool, and affect our external reality.
We do not have to feel lost and tossed around by the seemingly overwhelming forces of the mind and emotions. Without going into too much details and esoteric banter, what draws me to study and share vedic philosophy and astrology is how, the more that I learn and uncover about my basic nature and the strengths that are present (which I often ignore), I realise how the story from which I was born into has become the exact fodder needed to become who I am.
The myths and metaphors that make up the bedrock of vedic culture come to life in our own lives, and over the years of my study, the profundity continues to astonish me.
Through personally experiencing inner re-structuring and transformations while observing celestial events and working to understand the nature of the mind and emotions, as well as applying principles of meditation and mindfulness in daily life, I have learnt how to navigate choppy seas, detours and setbacks, by continually adjusting my sails and being brought back to a place within, where I have no choice but to fully accept self and circumstances, starting from where I am, here and now.
It is my intention that by sharing these insights, it may help you to access your own strengths and inner resources; to remind you that your ability to overcome and shine through adversity is more real than any problems in your lives.
August 2017 cosmic weather forecast:
This month of august is the most intense of this year.
We see a converging of multiple discordant planetary energies, preceding the change of signs of Saturn, Jupiter and The Nodes. Added to that, There are two eclipses, saturn and the nodes are in gandanta (spiritual knot), saturn and mercury are also currently retrograde.
Mercury is retrograde in Leo from 12/8 to 5/9
Saturn is Retrograde in Scorpio until 24/8 – Then continues direct motion and finally moves out of Scorpio on 28/10, though will remain in gandata.
Jupiter moves into Libra on 12/9
Rahu & Ketu are moving into cancer/capricorn on 18/8 and always travel in a retrograde motion.
This month’s theme could be said to be one of frustration and delay. With Saturn and Mercury retrograde, take stock of your plans, avoid travel if you can, or if you need to travel, allow plenty of time to get to where you need to go, to prepare for traffic jams, unexpected weather, or anything unplanned. Delays are more common during this time. Back up your work, double check your accounts and plans, and most importantly, practice patience, breathe deeply and accept when things don’t go to plan, or when misunderstandings occur.
With Saturn travelling the last degrees of scorpio, and having been retrograde since april, there have been many old, issues that have re-surfaced that we thought we had already dealt with. Although the challenges and difficulties may have been tough, this gandanta junction between scorpio and sagittarius is the most potent, as the centre of the galaxy is said to lie within this part of the zodiac. This part of scorpio is the tail of the scorpion, where to poisons collect. Metaphorically this relates to the alchemical transformation of poison that hurts to wisdom which heals.
This is an opportunity to delve into the deeper reasons of our karmic blocks, knots and limitations. Old structures within your psyche may feel like they are breaking down and dissolving, you may even feel like your entire personality is having a huge overhaul. It can bring insecurity and an unsettled mind.
However this time can be used to connect deeper into one’s core, beyond judgements and ideas of the self; the dissolution may even trigger a kind of spiritual awakening for some.
Focus on your practice, whatever that is, work hard, do yoga, meditate, find things to be grateful for, take stock of what is not working in your life, and make the decision to create change, even if the ‘how’ is unclear. Patience and persistence is rewarded in time!
Jupiter takes 12-13 months to travel through one zodiac sign.
The past year he has been in the sign of virgo, the sign of the maiden, and symbol of purity, health, cleanliness, healing, service and routine. It has been a time for many, to re-address their health and lifestyle and make necessary changes.
With Jupiters’ movement into libra next month, expect a more positive and expansive time in your relationships, friendships and business partnerships.
Libra is a sign of partnership, business, the marketplace and all types of relationships. It represents harmony, balance, grace, diplomacy, beauty, art, music and writing. The next year will involve an expanded sense of these aspects of life, many will enter into new relationships, or start business. Expect creative and artistic refinement.
Rahu & Ketu take 1.5 years to travel through a sign. Right now they are at the very early degrees of Leo (they always move in a retrograde motion) and will move backward into Cancer in two days. Rahu will be hovering in gandanta for some time. The last degrees of cancer can also stir unsettled emotions and overwhelm of feelings, so take it easy on yourself and your hearts. Following this, the sun will will be joining Rahu, which is what the full solar eclipse will be on the 21st of this month. On the 7th, there was a partial lunar eclipse, so the emotions were troubled that week; things were being shaken up within the subconscious. In the time leading up to the full solar eclipse on the 21st, things are being uncovered and revealed. It is a good time for deep inner work.
Think “dark side of the moon”. This obviously has its drawbacks with themes around delusion and deception, but positively we can harness this in tandem with saturn in scorpio and penetrate deeply into the heart of truth and garner much insight and wisdom. Meditate and watch your mind and thoughts. Leave important decisions and plans till a few days after the eclipse, when the energy settles and is not so turbulent. Otherwise you can feel confused and get caught up in too much thinking and fears, or rushing to make poor choices that do not reflect your deeper truths and needs.
Overall, this month’s potent energy is hugely transforming with so much growth potential, if one can embrace the turbulence and say yes to life, even though it is unsettling. Know you are ok deep down, change is the only constant & difficulties do not last forever.
Enjoy the process!
Retrograde planets appear to move backwards in the sky, from earth. This amplifies their energy, often causing delays, setbacks and frustrations, and in the case of mercury, this would apply to anything related to travels, emails, messages, post, and all forms of communications.
Gandanta is a sanskrit word meaning ‘spiritual knot’. It also translates as ‘drowning’. It lies at the junction of the fire& water signs; pisces/aries, cancer/leo and scorpio/saggitarius.
Fire and Water combine. These places in the zodiac are where steam is created, and planets, when placed in the very last or very early degrees of these signs carry residual past life karma and ‘poisons’ that can feel knotted, in regard to the significations of the planet. Sometimes situations arise in life in which the more one tries to unravel, the more complicated and knotty it can become. Gandanta planets can promise deep transformation, but often not without turmoil.
Mercury is the planet that governs communications in all it’s forms. It governs the rational and logical aspect of our mind, as well as logistical matters such as travelling and timetables. Mercury goes retrograde, several times throughout the year, for several weeks at a time.
Saturn is the taskmaster, he represents all that which we would rather avoid; hard work, discipline, duties, chronic illness, lethargy, laziness, setbacks and delays. Whatever he touches, he constricts in some way. However, with a proper attitude and respect to these aspects of life, karmic issues can transform positively with patience, persistence, tenacity, focus, humility, and temperance. Think, “Creative Limitation”
Jupiter is the great teacher, he represents wisdom, higher knowledge, religion, goodwill, fortune, prosperity and benevolence. Whatever he touches, he expands.
Jupiter, known as Guru in India, he gives us access to inner wisdom, through deep introspection, meditation and/or through actual teachers and gurus in life (in any field). Whenever we learn something new, it expands our understanding of life and our role in the big picture. Knowledge transforms into wisdom.
The north and south nodes, known as Rahu & Ketu, respectively, represent the Eclipse. They are symbols of a snake, or dragon (demon) who’s head was severed after drinking Amrita, the elixr of immortality, while disguising himself as a god, in between the sun and moon. (There is a detailed story attached to this which I will cover in a future article).
However, since he became immortal, this meant that he landed a place in the cosmic pantheon and therefore governs the eclipse energy which is generally known to be highly inauspicious, across many cultures of the world.
The darkening of the lights (sun & moon) are said to cause negative and malefic effects on the mind and psychology. It is a time to go within, meditate, fast and generally keep away from too much activity. Rahu and Ketu are highly significant to analyse and understand in a personal chart. They signify the karmic axis in which our soul travels on, indicating latent past life gifts and strengths, which paradoxically need to be released, yet integrated into our lives, becoming part of the new territory and ground that we are walking in this life.
It can seem that there is much focus on negativity in our lives; what is not working, leaving us feeling challenged by one thing or another, almost without respite.
It can feel very tiring
I am suggesting a way to look at and meet challenges without the notion of “ oh when is this going to end?” but rather with an attitude of “how best can I approach this?” When the challenges and tensions in life arise, it can throw us off centre. We are tested in these moments. Are you a spiritual warrior in pursuit of the Truth or do you harbour a sense of entitlement and act out of Fear?
Everyone inherently has the power to create effective change in their lives. It may not be the kind of change we want or visualise, but everyone has the power to direct their mind and awareness in any direction, with focus, on anything in life. Nothing needs to have a hold over us. That is our power.
Mars represents our pure and raw energy and ego; now!
Saturn is the ultimate yogi, he is unfettered by time, as all things take their natural course, all that lives dies. Saturn represents delays, setbacks; he is the lord of time.
The lesson and gift that these planets can teach us, is beautifully illustrated by these words of wisdom from Hawaii:
Makia : Energy Flows where Attention Goes
Mana : Confidence; All Power Comes From Within
We have the power (mana) to shift our attention and focus (makia) on what we want to create in our lives. This does not mean to think we are god, rather that we align ourselves with a greater presence which is an act of surrender. Accepting that we are not in control of the weather and waves, however like a ship at sea, we can steer our direction with focussed attention.
Only we can choose to slow down in moment of heated impatience and flurry. In that moment, patience is the sword of peace that needs to be drawn. It is cool and clean and sharp. Moments that test our patience, are testing our strength and resolve that requires patience to be exercised. This is the seat of our Mana.
When these two planets come together in aspect or conjunction, it can often feel like a frustrated, lethargic, scatty, disorganised or tense time and internal energy. If the conjunction activates a key area of your chart; power issues, delays and feelings of laziness can be highlighted. However, Saturn creates structure, which when used to focus our raw energy, can be very constructive, especially when the pressure and resistance is embraced and welcomed rather than feared or ignored.
Pressure creates resistance that ultimately gives us strength. This is why adversity exists; our spirits are in training.
It is important to understand that we are not victims to planetary movements and forces. We are affected by them, but like a ship sailing out at sea on an ineffable journey through life, learning to use the forces and take advantage of the challenges, delays as well as good luck and fortitude means that we can become masters of our nature and steer our course with ease and grace and foresight.
Be Well x
Relationships can often weather many storms, and like a storm, tornado or hurricane we know the damage that can be caused when high winds and torrential rain sends bamboo beach side huts flying, uprooting trees and severe flooding, etc.
It can sometimes feel like this in the aftermath of a big fight with your loved one. Sometimes we reel in horror at the damage done, looking at the broken bits of a life shared, now scattered around. It seems impossible to fix. However, after the storm has passed the village people, slowly and surely collect all the debris and damage and make new structures, strengthen old ones and clear off the rest.
Although damage has been done, new things have been learnt, adaptability and resourcefulness have been increased to weather the next storm with stronger resilience.
Storms are a necessary part of life and as my favourite quote says :
“The strength of a ship is not measured by how well it sits in the harbour but how well it copes on the open seas in the middle of a storm”
And, the boat will only sink because of the water that gets in the boat, not because of all the water around it. These are poignant analogies to help navigate the sometimes difficult waters of relationships, when our personal storms seem to blind us from seeing clearly.
A good storm can be seen as a way of clearing up what is sloppy and spoiled, making way for newer and stronger bonds to grow.
