One of 2023’s main astrological events Venus Retrograde, although there are multiple events compounding and adding different experiences (because this is life isn’t it? )
Did you know, that in Jyotisha, Venus is known as Shukracharya, a male deity? Shukra is the other Guru, alongside Jupiter – but where Jupiter is the Guru of the Devas, Shukra is the teacher of the Asuras, the ‘demons’ – (or ‘lower aspects of our consciousness’ ).
His teachings are not for the faint of heart, because although Venus can give us our hearts desires, he cannot assure us Sukha – or true joy and happiness, as illustrated by the story of Shukra and his daughter who so desired to be married to a Prince, and although her father could arrange for the marriage to take place, Shukra could not give his daughter the true love of the prince – his heart was elsewhere.

Venus rules Taurus and Libra, so, if you have many planets or strong placements here, this transit will be impacting you! On a mundane level it indicates tiredness, overwork and possible burnout, especially if you have been abusing your body. With Saturn currently retrograde in Aquarius, and soon Mercury will be retorgrading this months, this is even more obvious – It is not the time to cut corners or lax on issues especialyl regarding health and wellbeing.
Venus represents the reproductive system and hormones – fluid and water (she is a water planet) and our emotions, sensitivities, feelings, moods, especially if you have taurus or libra moon.
Shukra, means white, pure, semen in sanskrit and refers to the pure essence of a thing – so when we are not clean, clear and doing regular purificatory activities, body mind and spirit, our body and emotions get polluted – even more so in todays world. It isn’t just our diet we need to be aware of, but what we consume on all levels, media, friends, family etc.
Venus connects to money, wealth, finances, luxuries, idea of value, beauty, self worth, vehicles, relationships, spouse, women/females, refinement, art, creativity, sweetness and desire.
When retrograde, a backspin is thrown on all these affairs (depending on what are the key issues/themes occurring for you)
It is a time to reflect and review, particularly around relationships, money and value.
The kind of partners you have in your life is a direct reflection of your sense of self worth. You may find yourself refelcting on past relatioships at this time. Old flames may contact you. It can be a time of renewal and rebirth.
You may notice your attitudes changing as you deepen your sense of connection to self, and not projecting so many needs onto other people.
You may also notice shifts and changes in what you value, what you want out of the connections in your life, maybe you are outgrowing certain friendships and looking for a greater connection in life. Money and financial issues may also trigger a re assessment of priorities and what is ‘valuable’
Healing/working with your ‘Venus’ – can heal many issues around love, desire and money.
Venus will retrograde for 40 days and 40 nights. This happens once every 18 months. – And yes, if that sounds familiar, this is the biblical star which guided the 3 wise men (Magi) to baby Jesus, which some theologians/astrologers think may have also been in conjunction with Jupiter, giving its extraordinary magnitude.
Venus : Combustion, Retrograde & Gandanta
Right now, Venus appears in the night sky as the evening star. As Venus gets closer to the he sun he disappears from our view, gets dissolved in the Sun (Combustion 8 – 18 Aug) and reappears as the morning star. Venus significations get ‘burned up’ – stressed and pressured. They are also purified and transformed.
This is a huge time of testing for relationships, and potential for enormous healing and transformation.
Venus in Leo/Cancer connects us to our Hearts and Home so anything that is not in alignment, will dissolve in this time.
This is a symbolic 40 day journey into the underworld where Venus is transformed. It is like a New Moon process, the closer the moon gets to the sun, its light diminishes, there are endings and closures and completions, and some days later, the moon reappears as a thin crescent.
During Venus’s retrograde, she is conjoined enemy Mars until Aug 7th, opposed by Saturn. Then she passes through the karmic gandanta zone as she moves back to Cancer – 5-9 August. Venus then stays in Cancer until Sept 4th (same day that mercury turns retrograde) and will move back into Leo, passing the gandanta zone a third time between 30 Sept – 3 Oct.
Gandanta is a sanskrit term meaning a knot, knotted, or drowning, and indicates a (short) time period where difficult and karmic events take place. It is a significant astro event when a planet is retrograding across two signs. Often it indicates events or situations that are difficult to untangle, difficult emotions, unresolved issues rise to the surface to be addressed. there isn’t anything to fear, if you are doing the inner work and facing your shadows, then you can invite your ‘demons’ to tea and get more intimate with your darkness.
